Delaware Senior Olympics Annual Games: This fall there were 1283 entries in more than two dozen different sports! About half of the games were held in September with the other half coming up in October. DSO is proud of all the seniors who got off their rockers to train for and then participate in one or more of the competitions offered at venues up and down the state. Because there were so many registrants in women’s volleyball and in the new sport pickleball, those sports were moved to a larger facility! Both were moved to PAL Hockessin. More complete results for all the sports will be posted on the DSO website. http://www.delawareseniorolympics.org Click on the name of each sport to get the latest information.

Shuffleboard: Shuffleboard for both men and women was held at Westminster Retirement Home in Dover on August 25. Gold medal winners in their age groups were Jayne McCleary, Phyllis Tarburton, Dorothy Sawyer, Clare Kauffman, Sally Beise, Ty Coffield, Bradley Lane, Thomas Sawyer, Richard Wagner and Edgar Kauffman. Beatrice Derickson, Zeeger deWilde took home silver medals.

Gold medalists in the 5k walk were Linda Hill, Fay Stone, Bradley Lane, Leonard Ferris, E. Marvin Stouffer, and Ronald Salamon while Amos Alston received a silver medal.

Men’s Volleyball: According to Phil Klabunde, the Delaware Senior Olympics men’s volleyball tournament was held September 7 at A.I. DuPont High School in Greenville. Eleven teams, with players ranging from 50 to 81 years old, played four matches each, attempting to qualify for the 2009 National Senior Games to be held in Palo Alto, CA next August. (All Gold & Silver medal winning teams qualified) Split into two groups, the 'younger' group (50 to 60+) had 6 teams. In the 50+ age group John Hintz's Delaware Spike team took the Gold, beating both of the other 50+ teams and splitting their other 2 matches. Mike Ingram's Court Jesters won the Silver, splitting with the other 50+ teams and losing their other 2 matches, while Wayne Duncan's Nomadic Spikers lost to both of the other 50+ teams to earn Bronze while splitting their other 2 matches. The sole 55+ team, Richard Markland's Delaware Diamonds, won all 4 matches in their pool, earning the 55+ Gold medal. Between the two 60+ teams, Wayne Minger's Maryland Red team beat Bob Swain's Highlanders to earn 60+ Gold and won 1 of 3 of their other matches. The Highlanders earned Silver, also winning 1 of their 3 other matches. In the 'mature' group there were 5 teams from 65+ to 75+. Denny Moore's AC 65s earned Gold by winning all 4 matches while Steve Bilebof's Spike Force 65s won Silver splitting their matches 2 & 2. In the 70+ division, Phil Klabunde's Spike Force 70s earned Gold by winning 3 of 4 matches, while Bob Shellenbarger's Delaware Gold got Silver at 0 & 4. Rich Stillman's Fairfield Seniors earned Gold in the 75+ age group, going 1 & 3 in their matches.

Women’s Volleyball: The Delaware Senior Olympics women’s volleyball tournament on September 14 drew 16 teams this year, seven of which were from the downstate Senior Lo-Del League organized by Marion Lisehora. The top two teams in each age group have now qualified to participate in the National Senior Games in the San Francisco Bay Area next August. Peggy Olivero, DSO Coordinator for women’s volleyball did a great job organizing the tournament and reports the following results. All seven Lo-Del teams won medals in age group competition! The First Staters defeated the upstate Lady Wonders in the 65+ championship game to win gold. In the 60+ age group Lo-Del teams made a clean sweep, as the Quick Chicks took gold, Small Wonders earned silver and the Ladybugs received bronze. In the 55+ age group the Dune Diggers claimed silver, and in the 50+ age group the Rough Edges garnered silver, while the Shore Shakers were bronze medalists. Upstate teams D&M 70+ and Silver Streaks 55+ both won gold. Upstate Just Doin’ It 55+ claimed bronze. In the 50+ age group the upstate Spychos won the Delaware Gold. Out-of-state teams that earned overall medals were the West Virginia team When and Where 55+, Gold; a Maryland team Queens of the Court 50+, Gold; a Pennsylvania team Net Results 50+, Silver; and a Virginia team Great Expectations, 50+ bronze.
