Delaware Annual Games: The 2009 Games have started and will continue for the next two months in over two dozen individual and team sports. To keep up with the schedule and results visit http://www.delawareseniorolympics.org frequently to see what is happening. Triathlon, held July 18 at Lake Como, led off this year’s games. It was offered for the first time this year, and 8 senior competitors took the challenge! The games will conclude November 6 with Line Dancing.

Gala Social Event: This fall celebration will be held at the Modern Maturity Center in Dover on November 1, 2009, with a 5 p.m. Social Hour and Cash Bar. Dinner will be at 6 p.m. Make reservations now for only $18.00 per person by mailing your check to Delaware Senior Olympics, 1121 Forrest Ave, Dover, DE 19904.

National Senior Games: More than 130 Delaware senior athletes have returned from Palo Alto, California, after competing in the National Senior Games – the Senior Olympics. Congratulations to all who participated! Complete results can be found online at http://www.2009seniorgames.org/

Swimming: Maureen White, who swims at the Sussex Family YMCA, has returned from the NSGA Nationals in Palo Alto, California, with a bronze medal in the 100 breast stroke, 4th place ribbons in 50 yard breastroke and 200 yard breaststroke, a 5th place ribbon in 50 yard freestyle and a 7th place ribbon in 100 yard freestyle! Marie Neaves, DSO swimming coordinator, brought home 3 breast stroke medals – gold in the 50, silver in the 100 and bronze in the 200! Congratulations!

Women’s Softball: According to Delaware Diamonds 50s coach, Kit Ryan, the Diamonds won 5th place ribbons and the Miss Congeniality Award in California. They watched every game and talked to almost every team. They made tons of friends, exchanged pins and have memories to last a lifetime. California Spirit won the Gold Medal. The Diamonds 50s play in the Senior Women’s Softball League at Sports At The Beach in Georgetown.

Minnie Cubbage: The Blue Chicks 65s softball team and the Senior Women’s Softball League are mourning the death of Minnie, who passed away on August 13. Minnie and her 3 sisters Georgia Irwin, Ellen Cavins and Doris Brown all played softball for the Blue Chicks 65s in last year’s State Tournament. She will be greatly missed by all.

Cycling: John Spieker who was recently in Spain, managed to see 3 tour stages and bike over 400+ miles with 40,000 ft of elevation, which he said is “a little different from Delaware.”  He biked the Pyrenees tour with Thomson Bike Tours, which he said is a great group if anyone is interested in guided bike tours of Europe.

Amish Ride: According to DSO Cycling Coordinator Suzanne Cavanaugh, the Amish Ride is on Sept. 12 in Dover at 8 a.m. Distances are: 15, 25, 50, 62 and 100 miles. Everyone sets their own pace and distance. Friends and relatives may be invited to be part of the DSO team. Contact Suzanne for more information, clcsgc58@yahoo.com

Olde Tymers: The Olde Tymers Softball League’s 70+ men’s team won the 14th Annual Bill Tait, Montgomery County, Maryland Senior Softball Association Invitational Tournament held July 19 at Olney, Maryland. The Olde Tymers Softball League plays in Dagsboro. For more information about OTS call Bo Wood, president, at 945-1849.

YMCA Volleyball: The fall adult volleyball leagues at the Sussex Family YMCA will start play on September 9 for the Women’s Division and September 14 for the Co-ed League. Contact James Botti for more information at 302-296-9622.

New Volleyball Class: Indian River School District Adult Ed will offer a new Beginner’s Volleyball Class for Women 45-70+ at Georgetown Middle School starting Tuesday, September 8. Come join the fun!
