The 2007 National Senior Games – the Senior Olympics were held in Louisville, Kentucky in July. 256 Delawareans represented Delaware, which once again made Delaware first by percentage of population. A few of the results are mentioned in this column. The official results will be online by the time you receive your August News and Views, so if you are curious about how we did, please take a look at the results at http://www.2007seniorgames.com Awards were given through 8th place in each age group in each event in each sport. Our athletes in the individual sports have a DE beside their name, so it is easy to find them!
The women’s Delaware First Staters volleyball team, finished 5th in the 65+ age group, for the local team’s best finish ever at the National Senior Olympics! The first 4 places went to Texas, Arizona, Michigan and Ohio Tornados. Rounding out the top 8 teams were Ohio Ladybugs, Maryland and Pennsylvania. The 3 day tournament was played in the beautiful Kentucky Exposition Center, which housed many of the indoor sports as well as the Athlete’s Village.
PDMNY 70's, the only DSO men's VB team to go to Louisville, earned the silver medal by winning its first 10 games to get to the finals, only to lose to Maryland's MAC Magic 25 - 21 & 25 - 18.
Maureen White, who is also active in softball and volleyball downstate, competed in swimming in Louisville and came home with a silver medal and two bronze medals in 50-54 breast stroke events.
The Blue Chicks women’s 50+ softball team compiled a record of 4-0 in the final round of the National Senior Olympic Games to win top honors in the Silver Division of the women’s 50+ competition. The Gold Medal game pitted the Blue Chicks against a tenacious Tennessee Thunder team that fought its way through the loser’s bracket, but the Chicks prevailed 10-7.
The Blue Chicks women’s 60+ softball team, which combined players from upstate and downstate, barely missed a Bronze Medal. They played their way back through the loser’s bracket and faced an experienced “After Burner” team from North Carolina with the Bronze Medal on the line. At the end of the regulation 7 inning game, the score was tied 5-5. After 8 innings it was tied again at 8-8. In the bottom of the 9th the Chicks gave up another run, losing 9-8. Oh, so close!

Harriet Mair earned a silver medal in softball in the 65+ bracket with the Freedom Spirit Florida.
In men’s softball Dorsey 50's softball won a bronze in the silver bracket, and Dorsey 60's softball won bronze in the Platinum bracket. The DE Stars, won Gold in the silver bracket and the DE Legends took Gold in the 55 gold division.Cyclists who medaled or finished in the top 8 in Louisville are:
Gene Mirolli, DSO President, reports that his basketball team, Gino’s 55s, won its first game ever at the NSGA level. Congrats, Gene!
Registration for the2007 Delaware Senior Olympics will remain open until August 15, and late registrations will be accepted after August 15 for an extra fee. Late registrations must be approved by the sports coordinator. Competitions in over two dozen sports will take place in September and October. Call the DSO Office at 1-888-881-6128 to request a registration form. Forms can also be found on the DSO web-site http://www.delawareseniorolympics.org
A new beginner volleyball class for women 45 and older will be held at Sussex Central Middle School in Georgetown on Tuesday nights starting in September. Watch for the Indian River School District Community Education Brochure and Registration Form in your mailbox later this month or call Marion Lisehora at 934-9512 for more information.
