Delaware Sports Hall of Fame: Congratulations to Dave Hubinger, who was inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame on May 20, 2009! He has won more men’s tennis state championships and titles (42) than any other Delaware player. He has also won 40 medals in tennis, golf, bowling and table tennis in Delaware Senior Olympics competitions, and in 2007 he was honored with the DSO Outstanding Athlete Award.
The Annual DSO Picnic was held on May 2 at Killen’s Pond. DSO athletes, their spouses, kids, grandkids and friends all had a great time on a beautiful Saturday. Put it on your “to do” list for next year if you didn’t get there this year.
Women’s Senior Softball: Senior softball players were rained out of several early season practices this season, but a league schedule of games started in early June as planned. Practices and games are on Monday evenings at Sports At The Beach in Georgetown. The 3 Sussex teams are looking for new players. There are two 50+ teams and one 60+ team. Older players may play down on a younger team, but younger players may not play on an older team. The 60+ team must find more new players this year. If you would like to get outside, get a little exercise and have some fun, please call the women’s team sports coordinator, Marion Lisehora, at 302-934-9512. You’ll be glad you did!
Lebanon YMCA Volleyball Tournament: The Delaware First Staters 70+ volleyball team traveled to Lebanon, PA, on May 2 to participate in a 10 team tournament of players 50 and over. The hardy 70+ ladies made a one day trip of it, leaving Millsboro at 5:45 a.m. and arriving back home at 10 p.m.! 7 hours of driving for 7 more hours of playing! Dinner in Lancaster on the way home was the reward for winning more games than they lost, despite being the oldest team in the tournament.
Rehoboth YMCA Volleyball: The spring leagues finished their play-offs in early June. Congratulations to the many seniors who play in the Y leagues with the younger players. In the Women’s Division, Net Access won the Championship for the fifth straight time! And five of the nine Net Access players are seniors! Purple Parrot won in the Co-ed Division, and Team Gator was the Co-ed “A” League Champion. Registration of teams for the fall leagues will be August 1 – September 1. Contact the YMCA for more information.
Adult Plus: Women’s Volleyball is now being offered by Adult Plus for the summer months on Wednesday nights in the Del Tech Gym in Georgetown.
Senior Lo-Del Volleyball League: This League plays twelve months a year! Teams play at Georgetown Middle School on Thursday evenings during the school year and at Delmarva Christian High School during the summer months. Seven teams are playing this summer! A tournament, coordinated by the Quick Chicks 60s team, will be held July 10th and 11th at Delmarva Christian High School. Twenty teams from Delaware and neighboring states have registered to participate!
Senior Women’s Softball: More than 35 women turned out for the first softball practice of the season on April 22. They are members of the Alley Cats 50s, Delaware Diamonds 50s, Delaware Diamonds 60s and Blue Chicks 65s. Games between the 4 teams are now underway at Sports At The Beach on Monday evenings.
