Washers is another new sport. It is a game of skill, similar to Horseshoes, in which individuals or teams compete against one another in an effort to be the first to reach a winning score of 21 points. The game consists of two washer boxes located opposite one another, each with a 4” dia cup. Contestants stand next to one box and throw washers toward the cup in the other box. The object is to land in the cup, or in the box, to score. The cup is 4 inches in diameter, and the boxes are at least 16” square and positioned 16 ft apart, into which players throw washers to score points. Washers are standard round metallic washers,1.75” to 2.5" in diameter with a center hole.  Each pair of washers should be painted or otherwise marked to distinguish them from others, and should be the same weight and thickness. Bright colors are recommended, particularly in grassy or wooded environments where errant washers might easily be lost.

Volleyball: The Senior Women’s Volleyball League will start its summer season at Delmarva Christian High School in Georgetown on June 10. Seven teams have registered to play.

Women’s Softball: The five teams in the Senior Women’s Softball League, which includes players 45 and older, have been practicing at Sports At The Beach in Georgetown this spring. Opening games will be on June 7, and the season will run through September. The DSO State Softball Tournament will be on September 25 at Schutte Park in Dover. In tournaments a team must play in the 5 year age group of its youngest player. Age groups are 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, etc. Older players may play down into a younger age group.

YMCA Women’s Volleyball League: The season will end on June 16 with both semi-finals and the championship match at Beacon Middle School. The league is very well-balanced this spring. The Rough Edges have been in first place most of the season, but the last couple of nights will be crucial in seeding the teams for the play-offs, which start June 9. The YMCA will offer women’s and co-ed volleyball leagues again in the fall.

Dover Downs: DSO volunteers enjoyed working at Dover Downs doing pre-race and post-race inventories of the vendors’ items that were sold over the NASCAR race week-end. DSO appreciates all the volunteers who donated time in this fund-raiser for DSO.

Joyce Perry

Joyce Perry: We were saddened by the death of Joyce Perry, 58, on April 17. She was one of our champions in basketball and tennis. The former University of Delaware basketball coach received both the DSO Outstanding Athlete Award in 2006 and the Charlie Marten Award for returning to DSO competition after undergoing chemotherapy for ovarian cancer in 2008. She was an inspiration to all of us and will be greatly missed. Carla Markell

Carla Markell, Delaware’s First Lady, addressed members of 48 volunteer organizations, including DSO, on April 24 at the Volunteer Fair held at Bear Trap Dunes in Ocean View. Each county had a Volunteer Fair that day, and she attended all three of them.
