Delaware Senior Athletes did very well at the Eastern Shore Senior Games (ESSG) held at Salisbury University April 23-25. Competions were held 5 year age groups. Thank you Salisbury University, Dr. Carol Wood, and all of the coordinators that helped make the games a success.

Complete ESSG results can be viewed at: http://www.salisbury.edu/seniorgames/2009ESSG_Results/2009_results.htm

ESSG Delawarean Highlights: Congratulations to all the Delaware participants!

Tennis: Helen Chenoweth and Sue West won gold in 60+ Women's Doubles Tennis at ESSG.

Swimming: Seven Delaware Senior Athletes participated in Salisbury University’s ESSG swimming competition. The DSO swimmers garnered over 20 medals in various senior age groups! Everyone had a good time and achieved great swimming results. See picture.

Cycling 40K Road Race: John Cohen was first overall and first in men’s 55-59, and Jo Johnson was third overall and first in women’s 60-64. Delaware riders should definitely plan on this event next year.

Women’s Volleyball: All six teams from the Senior Lo-Del Volleyball League, which plays year round in Georgetown, entered the ESSG Volleyball Tournament on April 25. Gold medals were won by the First Staters (70+), Quick Chicks (60+), and Dune Diggers (55+). Silver was earned by the Small Wonders (55+), while the Rough Edges (50+) took bronze and the Shore Shakers (50+) finished fourth. Two upstate teams, Lokahi (50+) and Lady Wonders (65+) also claimed gold medals.

Registration Forms: The 2009 Delaware Annual State Games registration forms will be available in early June. Keep checking the web-site!

Women’s Senior Softball: Senior softball players have been rained out of early season practices this season, but plan to start a league schedule of games in early June. Spring practices and summer games are on Monday evenings at Sports At The Beach. The 3 Sussex teams are looking for new players. There are two 50+ teams and one 60+ team. Older players may play down on a younger team, but younger players may not play up on an older team. The 60+ team must find some new players this year. If you would like to get outside, get a little exercise and have some fun, please call the women’s team sports coordinator, Marion Lisehora, at 302-934-9512. You’ll be glad you did!

Soccer Info from Vince Marianello: “Our future DSO men's soccer team is planning to go to the National  Senior Olympic Games in 2011. Currently, we have about 25 players, some of whom are already age-eligible and others are not quite 50 yet.  We practiced through the fall and winter, and will resume when spring leagues end.  Since it is a big commitment to agree to go to Houston in 2011, we are going to need a larger group to get enough players to make a team for 2011. Family obligations, health issues and cost will all work to limit the number of those who have the intent and ability to play in Houston. Right now, our team is almost entirely composed of players from New Castle county, and we want some soccer enthusiasts from Kent/Sussex to join us. If you are a soccer player who thought your playing days were over,  but are now wondering if this is for you, please send me an e-mail at vinlumar@verizon.net and tell me about yourself.  I will give you  information regarding when and where we will practice.”
