2008 Games Registration: If you are 50 or older, it’s time to register for the Delaware Senior Olympics Annual Games to be held in September and October of 2008! Registration packets will be e-mailed to those with e-mail addresses and mailed to those without an e-mail address. The registration packet will also be posted on the DSO website at http://www.delawareseniorolympics.org/ Packets should arrive by June 1. Anyone who wishes to receive a packet or wishes to join DSO may also contact the Delaware Senior Olympics, Inc. office in Dover at 302-736-5698 or toll-free at 1-888-881-6128.
Senior Group Challenge: The DSO president, Rich O’Shaughnessy, and vice-president, Peggy Olivero, made a presentation at the Indian River Senior Center in Millsboro on May 14 about the new DSO program. Senior Centers and other groups are encouraged to join the program and compete against each other by compiling points from the various activities they participate in. Check with your center director to see about enrolling in the popular Senior Group Challenge.
Blue Rocks Fundraiser: The baseball game on May 9 was held under miserable weather conditions at Frawley Stadium. Many seniors who had planned to go to support the DSO fund-raiser did not attend because of the bad weather.
Senior Women’s Softball League: Softball practices were canceled on three of the first four scheduled Mondays due to rain. With very few practices under their belts, the teams will start their schedule of games against each other on June 9 at Sports At The Beach in Georgetown. The 60+ team is still in need of more players. If you would like to play, call the Delaware Diamonds 60s captain, Dorcy Wilkins at 302-933-0910.
The Delaware Blue Chicks 65's softball team traveled to Glen Burnie, Maryland, to compete in a sanctioned SPA tournament on May 3 and 4. After round-robin play on Saturday, the Blue Chicks, managed and coached by Paula Klemm, were seeded first. The highlight that day was beating the 65's NSGA gold medal team (Golden Girls of VA). In double elimination play on Sunday, the Chicks beat the PA Fillies and the Golden Girls 70's, but dropped both contests against the Golden Girls 65's. As runners-up in this Softball Players Association regional tournament, the Blue Chicks received a personal invitation from the National Senior Women's Director to play in the SPA National Tournament in Gallatin TN in September. Downstate players on the team were: Delores Blakey, Doris Brown, Harriet Mair, Pat Venett and Sue West.

The Senior Lo-Del Volleyball League will play its summer schedule at the Delmarva Christian High School in Georgetown starting June 12. More than fifty women on seven teams will be preparing for the Delaware Senior Olympics Annual Games in September.
West Virginia Senior Volleyball Tournament: The Quick Chicks 60+ volleyball team was at the Berkeley - Martinsburg Recreation Center in West Virginia on May 10 to compete in a Senior Volleyball Tournament. The team came home with silver medals, which were presented to them at a banquet in the Martinsburg Elks Lodge.
Virginia Senior Games: Judy Lesher and Sue Pierson, members of the Rough Edges 50+ volleyball team that plays in the Lo-Del Volleyball League in Georgetown, played on a Virginia team, Queens of the Court, in the Virginia Senior Games on May 9 in Virginia Beach.
Pennsylvania Senior Games: Several Lo-Del volleyball teams will be competing in the Pennsylvania Senior Games on July 26 at the York Expo. For information about other sports and dates of competition visit: http://www.keystonegames.com/seniorgames.html
YMCA Volleyball: Both the Co-ed Division and the Women’s Division were involved in play-offs in late May at Beacon Middle School in Rehoboth. Although the leagues are open to adults of all ages, many seniors play on the teams. Watch for results in next month’s News and Views.
The Annual DSO Family Sports and Fitness Day Picnic was held at Lum’s Pond State Park on March 17. Delaware Senior Olympians, their spouses, children, grandchildren, and friends participated in the day’s many activities.
More Eastern Shore Senior Games Results: Swimming - Dave Jacobs reports that three swimmers from the Nanticoke Senior Center in Seaford also competed in the Eastern Shore Senior Games Swim Meet on April 4 at Salisbury University. Bill Beiser, 79, won gold medals in the 50 free, 50 back, 100 free and 200 free. Craig Moore, 62, won silver medals in the 50 free, 200 free and 400 free. Dave Jacobs, 64, won gold in the 50 free, silver in the 100 I.M., bronze in the 100 free and bronze in the 50 butterfly. Cycling - Nancy Hess won the gold in the 40K cycling event.
Pickleball: DSO is encouraging seniors to learn this new court sport. Pickleball will be added to the Annual Games this fall. Willa Jones of Rehoboth is helping players get started in Sussex County.
