Fun, Fellowship and Fitness:   If you belong to a group (such as a Senior Center, Adult Group like the ELKs, Church Group, etc.) and would like to get some healthy exercise, sign up now for the Delaware Senior Olympics'(DSO) Senior Group Challenge or Walk Delaware.  Both programs are free to Delaware Seniors 50 years of age and older.  Walk Delaware is a program for individuals.  The goal is to walk the combined length and width of Delaware (131 miles)in a 12-month period.  You may walk anywhere you like to accumulate the mileage. The Senior Group Challenge (SGC) is a Team program which follows the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans as published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  As you exercise you win points for your Team.  At the end of the annual cycle (Nov - Oct), the Team with the highest points wins an award at DSO's Annual Awards Dinner.  Individuals also receive certificates and pins, as certain personal levels are achieved, throughout the year.  For more information or to form a Team, please contact Dee Carroll, Senior Group Challenge Coordinator, (888) 881-6128 or email at admin@delawareseniorolympics.org.

For information on how you or your business can help sponsor DSO or how you can purchase an ad in the book, please contact Dee Carroll at the DSO Office (see above). DSO appreciates your support!

Registration Forms for the 2009 Delaware Annual State Games in the fall should be available in early June!

The Eastern Shore Senior Games at Salisbury University were April 23-25. If you competed, please e-mail me your results and a picture if you have one, and I will include them in my June column.

Women’s Senior Softball: Senior softball players started practicing at Sports At The Beach on Monday, April 20. The 3 Sussex teams are looking for new players. There are two 50+ teams and one 60+ team. Older players may play down on a younger team, but younger players may not play up on an older team. The 60+ team really needs to attract some new players or they may not be able to field a team this year. If you know of any women who would like to play, please have them contact Delaware Diamonds 60s, coordinator Marion Lisehora, 934-9512; Delaware Diamonds 50s, captain Debbie Estes 644-7220; Delaware Alley Cats 50s, captain Maureen White, 226-8080.

The Senior Lo-Del Volleyball League was represented at the April 4 Spring Fling Regional Volleyball Tournament at the Volleyball House in Elkridge, Maryland. The Delaware First Staters 70+ was the only 70+ team in the tournament, so it played in the 65-69 age group and still finished in third place. Maryland’s Snap, Crackle Pop 65+ picked up 3 members from our Delaware Small Wonders 65+ team, which did not attend the tournament, and they finished fourth. Pennsylvania’s Beaver’s Babes 65+ received the gold medal, while the upstate Delaware Lady Wonders 65+ took second place.

Shuttle 20 is a volleyball team formed by women who have learned to play volleyball in an instructional class on Tuesday nights at Georgetown Middle School. They enjoyed learning the game so much that they formed a team to enter in the YMCA’s Women’s Division Spring League, where they are playing very well, despite being the new kids on the block! Marion Lisehora teaches a new beginners class for women 45-70+ years of age every semester at Georgetown Middle School through Indian River School District’s Adult Education program. The next class will start in September. Join the fun!
