Annual Family Sports and Fitness Day Picnic May 17 at Lum’s Pond State Park: Pavilion #3, from 10 a.m. until dark. All Delaware Senior Olympians, their spouses, children, grandchildren, friends, and everyone interested in enjoying a day of fun with the Senior Olympics are invited. The cost is $13.00 for adults and $5.00 for children under 12. Lots of food, sports, fun games, and activities for all! Eastern Shore Senior Games Volleyball Tournament: The Senior Lo-Del Volleyball League entered all 6 of its teams in the Eastern Shore Senior Games Volleyball Tournament held April 5 at Salisbury University. The senior teams competed in 5 year age groups, determined by the age of the youngest player on each team. The First Staters (65) and the Quick Chicks (60) both brought home gold medals. The Small Wonders (60) earned silver, while the Ladybugs (60) and the Rough Edges (50) both captured bronze medals. The Dune Diggers (50) took a fourth place. Eastern Shore Senior Games Swimming: Swimmers from Sussex County competed in the meet on April 4 at Salisbury University with the following results. Henry DeWitt (60) 50m butterfly -gold, 100m freestyle - gold, 100m butterfly – gold. Maureen White (50) 50m freestyle – gold, 100m breaststroke – gold, 100m IM – gold, 50m breaststroke – gold. Barbara Parr (65) 50m butterfly - gold, 50m freestyle – gold, 100m IM – gold. Bernadette Antonioli (55) 50m butterfly - gold, 200m freestyle - gold, 100m freestyle – gold, 50m freestyle – gold. Marion Lisehora (75) 400m freestyle – gold, 200m freestyle – gold, 100m freestyle – silver, 50m freestyle – silver.

Men’s Basketball: The third annual Delaware Senior Invitational 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament was held Saturday, April 12, at the Hockessin PAL Center. Twenty-four men’s teams from Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania competed in six age brackets from 45 to 70. The championship in the 60s bracket was won by the Delaware Blue Bombers who defeated the Lancaster Warriors 46-43 in the final. The Blue Bombers were undefeated in all five tournament games. Team members are Kent St. Pierre, George Howard, Harold Kennard, Larry Kendis, Roger Raspen, and captain, Charlie Ganter. Other age bracket winners were: The Legends, Chester, PA – 45, Burlington Players, Westhampton, NJ – 50, No Time to Lose, Bethesda, MD – 65, Northern Virginia Hawks, Burke, VA – 70. The tournament was coordinated by DSO and benefited Delaware Senior Olympics.
Women’s Basketball: Saturday, April 26, the Hockessin PAL Center was the site of the Chesapeake Classic, a senior women’s 3 on 3 basketball tournament. National and world champion women’s teams were among the competitors. Strong teams that competed were were: Butler Cubs – Seventh Place, 2007 National Senior Games 50+, Latvian Ladies (Riga City, Latvia) – Champion, 2007 Huntsman World Senior Games 55+, Connecticut Sisters – Fifth Place, 2007 National Senior Games 55+, Celadrin Tigerettes – Champion, 2007 National Senior Games 60+, Connecticut High Fives – Fifth Place, 2007 National Senior Games 65+. The Delaware First Staters 65+ represented Sussex County. Results will be in next month’s News and Views. This tournament was also coordinated by DSO and benefited Delaware Senior Olympics.
Lebanon YMCA Volleyball Tournament: The Quick Chicks (60+) of the Senior Lo-Del Volleyball League participated in a 50+ Lebanon tournament on April 12. Although the Chicks didn’t win their pool or advance to the play-off, they played well against the younger teams they faced.
Women’s Softball: Three senior women’s softball teams are back on the ball fields at Sports At The Beach in Georgetown. The Alley Cats 50s (Capt. Maureen White, 302-349-4379 or 302-226-8080), Diamonds 50s (Capt. Debbie Estes, 302-644-7220) and Diamonds 60s (Capt. Dorcy Wilkins 302-933-0910) are still seeking new players. They are also hoping a fourth team will form and join the league. Players must be at least 50 by Dec. 31, 2008, to be eligible to play. A team plays in the 5 year age group of its youngest player. Age groups are 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69 and 70+. The teams will compete against each other on Monday evenings this summer in Georgetown, and they will participate in the Delaware Senior Olympics Annual Games in the fall. Want to play? Beginner’s Volleyball Class: A new Beginner’s Volleyball Class for women 45-70+ will be held again in the fall on Tuesday nights at Sussex Central Middle School in Georgetown through the Indian River School District’s Adult Education Program. If you haven’t played volleyball for years, plan now to come back to the game in September. New rules and skills will be taught, and games will be played for fun. Men’s Volleyball: At this time no senior men’s volleyball teams have been organized downstate. They are all upstate.
