Blue Rocks Night: On May 9 our Delaware Senior Olympians will be at Frawley Stadium for Famous Delawareans Night. Support this DSO fundraiser by using the flier at http://www.delawareseniorolympics.org/ to buy your tickets. Enjoy the game between the Blue Rocks and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans! DSO will receive a percentage of each ticket sold using the flier.
Annual Family Sports and Fitness Day Picnic: Mark your calendars now for this DSO event, which will be held at Lum’s Pond State Park – Pavilion #3 on Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m. until dark. All Delaware Senior Olympians, their spouses, children, grandchildren, friends, and everyone interested in enjoying a day of fun with the Senior Olympics are invited. The cost is $13.00 for adults and $5.00 for children under 12. Lots of food, sports, fun games, and activities for all! See the flier on the DSO website.
Women’s Basketball: A senior women’s basketball tournament, the Chesapeake Classic, will be held April 26. It is being directed by Helen White, highly regarded player-coach, and president of the NOVA United Senior Women's Basketball Association. Ms. White and DSO, led by Joyce Perry and Barbara Dunn, have teamed up to increase awareness for, and participation in, senior women's basketball. Twenty-five to thirty teams are expected to compete at the Hockessin PAL Center making it the largest senior women's tournament on the East Coast. Shore Senior Games: The 2008 games will be held in many sports from April 3 – 5 at Salisbury University for all men and women ages 50 and over. Registration is now open. Baseball: The Tri-State 55+ Senior Baseball League had an organizational meeting in Middletown on Saturday, February 23. Games will start in early May and continue on most Saturdays until the Senior Olympics are held in September. Tri-State is a feeder league for the annual baseball event. Women’s Baseball: John’s wife, Lois, helps run an unlimited age women’s baseball league. If anyone is interested in the league, use the same number or e-mail.
Cycling: Jo Johnson, one of our cyclists in the 60-64 age group, competed in the Tucson games of the Arizona Senior Olympics. She won a silver medal in the 1mile & 5k time trials, and a gold medal in the 10k and 20k road races. "Silver Sneakers": The Pelican Cove Cheer Center’s "Silver Sneakers" have been meeting Thursdays, 4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., at Long Neck Elementary School. All Seniors are encouraged to join the group on Thursdays. The activities vary from week to week depending on the number of people present. Some of the activities are: basketball shooting, volleyball, bocce, bowling, and floor hockey. Robert Radcliff is responsible for spearheading these activities. Contact him at 302-542-4145.
Women’s Volleyball: Teams from the Senior Lo-Del Volleyball League are preparing to enter spring tournaments in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, and Salisbury, Maryland, in April. The league plays on Thursday nights during the school year at Sussex Central Middle School in Georgetown. Contact Marion Lisehora at 302-934-9512. YMCA Volleyball Leagues: The spring session for two open adult volleyball leagues has just started at Beacon Middle School on Route 24 near Route 1. The Wednesday Night Women’s Division includes many senior women from the Senior Lo-Del Volleyball League, which plays in Georgetown. Defending champion, Net Access, which won both last spring’s and last fall’s YMCA sessions, hopes to 3-peat this spring. The Monday Night Co-ed Division is up for grabs, since last fall’s champion, EZ Pass, did not enter a team this session. Contact James Botti at 302-296-9622.
Women’s Softball: Next month three senior women’s softball teams will be back on the ball fields at Sports At The Beach in Georgetown. The Alley Cats 50s (Capt. Maureen White, 302-349-4379 or 302-226-8080), Diamonds 50s (Capt. Debbie Estes, 302-644-7220) and Diamonds 60s (Capt. Dorcy Wilkins 302-933-0910) will all be coming back, and the teams are seeking new players. They are also hoping a fourth team will form and join the league. Players must be at least 50 by Dec. 31, 2008, to be eligible to play. A team will play in the 5 year age group of its youngest player. Age groups are 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69 and 70+. The teams will compete against each other this summer in Georgetown, and they will participate in the Delaware Senior Olympics Annual Games in the fall. Want to play?
