National Senior Games: Delaware Senior Olympians, who qualified this fall to attend the National Senior Games in Palo Alto this summer, are now able to register. Athletes have been notified by e-mail that they may register online, and each qualifier has been assigned a number. Registration packets are arriving now in the mail, and registrations may also be mailed in. For more information about the National Senior Games visit http://www.2009seniorgames.org/
New DSO Office Manager: On January 26 Dee Carroll became DSO’s new Office Manager. Dee will also coordinate the Senior Group Challenge. Dee is not a stranger to Delaware Senior Olympics. She has for some time been a volunteer at DSO's cycling event, is a Walk Delaware participant and a familiar face at our picnics and galas. Dee's husband Bob is a DSO Cyclist. They are Palo Alto bound this summer. Welcome aboard, Dee!
Pelican Cove CHEER “Silver Sneakers” held an awards luncheon on December 4, 2008, at their center. The "Silver Sneakers" won first place for the second year in a row in DSO’s Senior Group Challenge. Presenting the T-shirt and certificate awards to the 40 recipients of the Pelican Cove CHEER Center was the Delaware Senior Olympics Vice President Peggy Olivero The group totalled an amount of 247,402 points for the year. The Senior Group Challenge consists of activities such as bicycling, walking, running, swimming, weight lifting, bowling, and golf as well as many other activities. Individuals were also acknowleged for their participation in the Walk Delaware. Also in 2008 six members of the CHEER fitness center participated in the Delaware Senior Olympics. Jayne McCleary won two gold medals in weight lifting events and a gold in shuffleboard; Vito Ingerto received a gold, for the second year in golf; Dave Hudson won a silver in both the 100 & 200 meter dashs and a gold in shotput; John Clancy won a gold in basketball shooting; Peter Harris won a silver in softball; and Jeanette Partilla won a gold in the100 meter dash.
YMCA Senior Pickleball: From 12 to 2 on Thursdays senior men and women are playing pickleball at the Sussex Family YMCA in Rehoboth. All seniors are welcome! It is free for Y members, and other participants may purchase a program membership that is good for pickleball for one year. For more information call the YMCA at 296-9622 and ask for James Botti.
YMCA Volleyball: Registration for the Open Spring Volleyball Leagues will be in February. A captains’ meeting will be held for all the leagues at 6 p.m. on February 19 at the Sussex Family YMCA in Rehoboth. League play will start in March. In addition to the Women’s and the Co-ed divisions, a 4 on 4 “A” League will be started. Contact James Botti at the YMCA for more information.
Women’s Beginner Senior Volleyball: A new beginner’s volleyball class for women, 45-70+, has started at Georgetown Middle School from 7-9 on Tuesday evenings. The class will continue on Tuesday nights through the end of May. Learn to play the game and then advance to a team in the Senior Lo-Del Volleyball League, which plays on Thursday nights. Women’s Senior Lo-Del Volleyball League: Six teams have started their winter/spring schedule which will run through May on Thursday evenings at Georgetown Middle School. They are the Rough Edges (50+), Shore Shakers (50+), Dune Diggers (55+), Quick Chicks (60+), Small Wonders (65+), and First Staters (70+). These teams will enter senior volleyball tournaments in neighboring states this spring. The Quick Chicks are organizing a large tournament to be held July 10 and 11 at Delmarva Christian High School. Many out-of-state teams are expected to come.
Women’s Senior Softball: Senior softball players are anxiously waiting for warmer April weather, when the 3 local teams will take to the fields at Sports At The Beach once again on Monday evenings. Teams are looking for new players. There are two 50-54 teams and one 60-64 team. Older players may play down on a younger team, but younger players may not play up on an older team. If you would like to join a women’s team this spring, please contact a team captain. Olde Tymers Softball League: There will be a general organizational meeting at 7 p.m. on April 1 in the Bethany Beach Town Hall for men and women who are at least 55 years of age. Practices start in April with games being played from May through August on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at the Dagsboro Church of God Field. For more information call Bo Wood, 945-1849.
Pickleball Group: Georgia Billger, Margaret Long, Willa Jones, Doris Brown, Pat Venett, Helen Chenoweth and Cindy Anderson played some pickleball outside in warmer weather. They are now playing indoors at the YMCA.
Andi Van Horn gets a hit in a softball game last fall. She and her Delaware Diamonds 60s teammates are looking forward to getting back on the field this spring.
Gwen Rash scores a run for the Delaware Diamonds 50s in a State Tournament game last fall. Her team will play at Sports At The Beach starting in April.
