New DSO Board Member:

Jeanette Partilla of Long Neck is the newest member of the Delaware Senior Olympics Board of Directors. Welcome, Jeanette! Jeanette organized the CHEER fitness center seniors at Pelican Cove into the Silver Sneakers, a very active group that won the statewide DSO Senior Group Challenge last fall! We are happy to have her on board!

Pelican Cove Center

Jeanette’s Pelican Cove Update:

The fitness center meets once a month at Pelican Cove CHEER to discuss upcoming activities.  Our next meeting is Thursday, February 21st, 10:00 AM at the Pelican Cove CHEER Center on Long Neck Road.  The Silver Sneakers has all types of fun activities planned for the upcoming months.  On Thursday evenings we meet at the Long Neck Elementary School at 4:30 P.M. to play hockey, bocce, basketball, and volleyball.   On Tuesdays at 8:00 A.M. we have organized walks throughout some of the area developments.  Our next "fun" bowling date is Wednesday, Feb. 13th, 3:00 P.M. at the Millsboro Bowling Alley.

This year our goal is for more member participation in the Delaware Senior Olympics.  This past year three of our members who participated in the Senior Olympics were winners in their age group.  Vito Ingerto placed 1st in golf; Dave Hudson placed 2nd in the 100 meter dash & 3rd in basketball shooting; and John Clancy placed 1st in basketball shooting.

In 2007 Pelican Cove CHEER fitness center members participated in the Delaware Senior Olympics Senior Group Challenge, and because of the members’ dedication and motivation, placed first with a total of 21,000 points, receiving an award plaque and award winning T-shirts at an awards ceremony presented by DSO Board Members Peggy Olivero and Rich O'Shaughnessy.

Women’s Volleyball:

A new beginners’ class of 45 to 75 year-old women has formed to play volleyball on Tuesday evenings at Sussex Central Middle School in Georgetown. Although the class started on January 8, you can still join in the fun and learn to play the game. Contact Marion Lisehora at 302-934-9512 for more information.

Women’s Softball:

In April three Sussex County teams of senior women will be returning to the softball fields. The Alley Cats 50s (Capt. Maureen White, 302-349-4379 or 302-226-8080), Diamonds 50s (Capt. Debbie Estes, 302-644-7220) and Diamonds 60s (Capt. Dorcy Wilkins 302-933-0910) will all be coming back. We are looking for a fourth team to join us. Players have to be at least 50 by Dec. 31, 2008, to be eligible to play. A team plays in the 5 year age group of its youngest player. Age groups are 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69 and 70+. The teams will play against each other all summer in Georgetown, and they will all participate in the Delaware Senior Olympics Annual Games in the fall.
