Pickleball: DSO Sport Description and Rules

pickleballAn 11 point game, Pickleball combines elements of tennis, squash and ping pong.

The racquets resemble ping pong racquets but have larger heads and longer handles.

The outdoor ball resembles a whiffle ball, but is a little thicker/heavier, while indoor balls can be whiffle-like or even made of foam.

The court is the same size as a badminton court, but the net is at the level of a tennis net. View a Pickleball court and Rules.

Coordinator Information:

I have participated in the Delaware Senior Olympics in Pickleball, Softball and Swimming and have received 14 gold and silver medals.

Pickleball is my current passion. I am actively involved in promoting the sport by participating in Mixed Doubles and Women’s Doubles tournaments in Delaware, MD and PA,  as well as Captain for Ladder Team play.In addition, I help coordinate and train new players with the Delmarva Dills  organized by Georgia Billger and June Fortney, past  DSO pickleball coordinators. The Delmarva Dills were instrumental in organizing play at one of the first indoor pickleball facilities in Lewes Delaware, The Factory. The Factory originally offered pickleball  2 days a week and currently offer play 5 days which includes a beginner program.

I have always participated in sports, from elementary school through lettering on sports teams at St. Mary's College in Maryland.  During my work life in Washington DC I sponsored and played Softball on the Mall and took up Racquetball.

In the 2009 Nationals Games in San Francisco our softball team, Delaware Diamonds and I were highlighted by games sponsor, AstraZeneca/Crestor. They produced a documentary film which espoused the importance maintaining a healthy active lifestyle.

My vision as pickleball coordinator is to combine the efforts of those players in the state from Beginners to Pickleball Ambassadors and grow the Sport of Pickleball.

I look forward to Delaware becoming Winners both on the court and off!
