Pitching Horseshoes in the Delaware Senior Olympics At Putt-A-Rosa, Milford, DE, October 12, 2008
On a pleasant day at Milford, 22 folks in the “over forty nine” age group met to compete in the sport of pitching horseshoes for the Delaware Senior Olympic’s gold, silver and bronze medals.
This yearly event is entered by pre-registration through the Dover office of DSO, supervised by the President Rich O’Shaughnessy, and administrated by volunteer tournament directors. (This year, they were Marshall “Mike” Baker of Newark, and Wayne Saulsbury of Dover, both members of the First State Horseshoe Club.)
The host for the fourth straight year was Judy and Walt Swain at their sports complex known as “The Putt-A-Rosa” on business Rte. No. 1 just 2 miles south of the Milford Diner. Their courts were sanctioned by the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association in 2004, which meets the requirement to hold Senior Olympics (horseshoes) at their site.
With 15 courts available and 10 classes competing, no one had to wait for available room. And this year, nearly 91% of the entrants won a medal ! The format was round-robin, 30-shoe games. Eleven gold, six silver and three bronze medals were won. AND, only two people went home as “also ran”.
