Outstanding Athlete Award
Art is viewed by many area swimmers as the “heart and soul” of senior swimming. He is the source of much information and advice about both the Senior Olympics and United States Masters Swimming. In 1971 Art, with Harry Rawstrom, co-founded the Delaware Blue Hen Masters Swim team. He has served Masters Swimming in a number of roles from Chair to Committee member. Representing the Delaware Valley Masters Swimming Team Art has competed in swimming events throughout the United States and Canada. In 1978 he was the highest point scorer in his age group at the Third Annual National YMCA Masters Championship Meet. At the 1988 United States Masters Swimming National Championships he won the 200 meter medley relay setting National and World Records. In 1989 at the Canadian National Championships in Quebec he set a national record in the 50 meter back stroke. He has participated in the National Senior Games three times setting a National record in 1989 in the 50 meter backstroke in St. Louis, Missouri where he also won two silver medals. During the 1991 Games in Syracuse he won a silver, bronze and two fourth place ribbons. Art has broken several age group records in Delaware Senior Olympics Swimming and currently holds two in the 60-64 age group, one in the 65-69 age group and one in the 75-79 age group.
